NXTSTYLE’s 2020 New Music Guide: Alae

We love discovering music from overseas. New Zealand four-piece band Alae is a great example as they caught our attention in 2019 with their smooth new single “Hit Me Where It Hurts”. We had a chance to interview the band to get a closer look at who they are what they have coming next.

“Hit Me Where It Hurts” was bought to life during the first writing session I’d ever done with musicians outside of the band.

There’s an annual NZ song writing initiative called SongHubs which we took part in, this song was the outcome. I was lucky to work with lots of talented people, especially Justin Gray – who is now our producer.

I don’t want them to take anything in particular, I just want the songs to elicit a sort of emotional response. If you’re on board with the theme’s you find in the song – that’s great. If you’re not, that’s all good too. If you love the hook, that’s even better! Just listen and be patient I guess. Songs feel like they change as we evolve so don’t be hasty!

In 2020 we’ll release two new singles followed by an EP. An NZ, AUS and USA tour is being brainstormed as we speak. There’ll be heaps of NZ shows over summer – so stay tuned!

BENEE is nailing it at the moment, heaps of awesome content from her.

Balu Brigada have an awesome new song called “Medicine”.

Julia Jacklin is so good!

Still loving that song from Toro Y Moi – “Ordinary Pleasure”.

I’m pretty into Zedd. “Lost in Japan” by Zedd and Shawn Mendes is such an awesome song. I’d love to make something in the same vein.

It’s all encompassing. It’s a sort of therapy, it’s a reminder. It is what I need it to be depending on the day.
