NXTSTYLE’s 2020 Songs of the Summer: Limón Limón “Frozen Lemonade”

INTRODUCING NXTSTYLE’S ‘SONGS OF THE SUMMER,’ HIGHLIGHTING OUR FAVORITE TRACKS WE’VE DISCOVERED THIS SUMMER. OVER 70 SONGS FROM NEW AND INDEPENDENT ARTISTS FORM OUR SUMMER 2020 SOUNDTRACK. TODAY WE FEATURE LIMÓN LIMÓN. THE DUO CONSISTING OF MEMBERS JASON AND RAND DELIVERED THE ULTIMATE SUMMER SONG IN “FROZEN LEMONADE”. TAKE A LOOK AS WE HAVE A LITTLE FUN TALKING SONG PLACEMENTS AND MUCH MORE IN OUR INTERVIEW WITH LIMÓN LIMÓN.

THE PRODUCTION ON “FROZEN LEMONADE” CAPTURES A PERFECT SUMMERTIME FEEL BUT LYRICALLY THE SONG TAKES ON AN ANYTHING BUT SUNNY SITUATION. TAKE US BEHIND THE CREATION OF THE SINGLE AND YOUR UNIQUE APPROACH TO IT.

JASON: We tend to have a lot of instrumentals and make a lot of music and then we just kind of strike when the iron is hot lyrically and melodically. I came up with the baseline and chords and I really liked the vibe but Rand didn’t quite see the potential yet. After I came up with some vocal melodies and showed them to him it seemed like everything started to click and then the lyrics just kind of poured out. We ended up liking this song so much that we decided to move it up in our release schedule.

RAND: To be fair, the first idea for “Frozen Lemonade” was a little riff played on the bass and I didn’t see the big picture yet. Sometimes you have to put blind faith in your band mate’s ideas to come up with something unique.

WHEN THINKING OF PLACEMENTS I CAN SEE THIS SONG FEATURED IN A GEICO COMMERCIAL, IN A SARCASTIC MOMENT WHERE LUCK RUNS DRY. IF YOU HAD A CHOICE, WHAT WOULD BE THE ULTIMATE SYNC PLACEMENT FOR “FROZEN LEMONADE”

RAND: I’m not sure I can top your GEICO ad, they are pretty much the only commercials I see on TV.

JASON: whatever pays the most haha

GETTING TO THE ROOT OF LIMÓN LIMÓN, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE ARTISTRY OF THE BAND AND THE PURPOSE YOU WANT TO BRING TO FANS? ARE THERE ANY ARTISTS THAT YOU LOOK UP TO THAT PLAY AN INFLUENCE ON THE BAND?

JASON: We are influenced by many different artists but some of our earliest inspirations are Empire of the Sun, Phil Collins and the Police. We wanted to create feel-good music that was unique, interesting and true to who we are as artists. We always try to make things that we really like and then just hope that people also like it.

WITH THE CHALLENGES OF THE PANDEMIC, HAS IT ALTERED YOUR PERSPECTIVES ON LIFE AND RELATIONSHIPS? DO YOU SEE IT INFLUENCING WHAT YOU WRITE ABOUT?

JASON: I think life has definitely changed a lot during this time and it’s sad that we had to cancel all of our shows but at the same time we are really trying to stay creative and finish up a lot of recorded music. It seems that people are definitely feeling more lonely than ever in this climate and hopefully our music helps people out in some capacity. I do really miss connecting with people in person and playing live music however.

RAND: One interesting perspective change for us is noticing how our songs are perceived differently now. Our lyrics are applied to this current situation in a way that wasn’t planned for when we wrote them. It’s been a cool effect to watch people interact with messages in a new way.

WITH MORE DOWN TIME THIS YEAR DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, PEOPLE HAVE PLACED THEIR ENERGY ON THINGS THEY PREVIOUSLY DIDN’T HAVE TIME TO FOCUS ON. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU’VE BEEN ABLE TO CONNECT WITH THAT YOU WOULDN’T NORMALLY HAVE TIME FOR OR EVEN THINK ABOUT?

JASON: I think for a lot of people it has forced them to really go within and learn more about themselves.

FAST FORWARD SEVERAL MONTHS DOWN THE ROAD. THE VACCINE IS HERE, AMERICA HAS FULLY OPENED! WHAT’S FIRST ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?

JASON: Releasing more music and touring! We have so many new fans that send us really amazing messages and it would be really amazing to meet them in real life and play music for them.

RAND: More in-person sessions with other artists. We’ve been doing a lot of remote collabing. It will be great to branch out more.

OF THE TALENTED ARTISTS, SONGWRITERS, AND PRODUCERS OUT THERE IS THERE SOMEONE YOU WOULD REALLY LOVE TO COLLABORATE WITH NEXT?

JASON: I would really love to work with Disclosure one day, as I’m a huge fan.

RAND: CHRVCHES would be amazing to work with, I know Jason agrees with this as well.

AS WE HEAD INTO THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT FROM YOU FOR THE REMAINDER OF 2020?

We have a couple of really cool collaborations and some really fun remixes along with a lot of new original music. I think the tough part for us is deciding which songs we should release first. We also have some fun 80s inspired tracks that we co-produced with a friend of ours.

YOUR TOP 5 SONGS THIS SUMMER:

JASON: i’ve been really listening to a lot of Joan lately and I love what those guys are doing. I have also been revisiting Chvrches and have been enjoying their music once again. I saw them in Australia in 2018 and they put on such a great show. Other than that I listen to a lot of classic pop music and world music. I am always searching for inspiration in the most random places.

IS THERE A CHARITY THAT MEANS A LOT TO YOU THAT YOU URGE OTHERS TO LOOK INTO?

JASON: I used to donate to quite a few charities but I feel like there is definitely a void in certain areas that I want to impact the most in society. I think the issues that I’m most passionate about are the environment and prison reform. The Innocence Project is great and I donate to them frequently but I feel like they focus too much on specific cases rather than helping a greater number of people. On a more esoteric note, I think the best charity is if people can learn to heal themselves and deal with their own issues first and then once healed, lend their strength, compassion and support to others.
