NXTSTYLE’s 2020 Songs of the Summer: ROMES “Lose My Cool”

INTRODUCING NXTSTYLE’S ‘SONGS OF THE SUMMER,’ HIGHLIGHTING OUR FAVORITE TRACKS WE’VE DISCOVERED THIS SUMMER. OVER 70 SONGS FROM NEW AND INDEPENDENT ARTISTS FORM OUR SUMMER 2020 SOUNDTRACK. TODAY WE FEATURE ALTERNATIVE POP DUO ROMES. BROTHERS JACOB AND NICK HAVE A JUST THE TYPE OF SONG THAT YOU’D LOVE TO HEAR IN THE SUMMER. YOU’LL BE IMPRESS BY THEIR APPROACH TO THEIR MUSIC AS THE BROTHERS TAKE A REAL HANDS ON APPROACH TO THEIR CAREERS. LEARN MORE ABOUT ROMES IN OUR FEATURED INTERVIEW.

“LOSE MY COOL” IS A FUN UPBEAT SINGLE THAT’S PERFECT FOR THE SUMMER. ALSO SOMETHING YOU’D SEE PLACED IN A COMMERCIAL. TAKE US THROUGH THE PROCESS OF CREATING THIS TRACK AND WHAT YOU LOVE ABOUT IT THAT MADE YOU CHOSE IT AS YOUR LATEST SINGLE. ANY FAVORITE MOMENTS FROM YOUR RECORDING SESSION?

I went down to L.A. (pre-quarantine) for a couple weeks to do some writing sessions with some dope people, one of them being Mark Foster. He’s such a cool, down to earth guy and made the whole session feel so comfortable and chill. We’d just shoot the shit, and talk about life, music, food, boxing, whatever. We were writing some other tracks and messing around with a bunch of ideas before we finally landed on what would become “Lose My Cool”. It was an effortless process and all happened very naturally. We wanted to write something that sounded a bit quirky and nostalgic. Nick and I felt it was a good time to release this particular track now given all the madness going on in the world. I think sometimes releasing a fun/lighthearted song during times like this can act as a form of escapism for some people, and I think that’s important.

SPEAKING OF COMMERCIALS, WHAT WOULD BE THE ULTIMATE SYNC PLACEMENT FOR “LOSE MY COOL”?

Apple & Honda, where you at!? A Tarantino soundtrack would be sick, but he’s supposedly only be making one more movie, so… fingers crossed I guess?

SOMETHING REALLY GREAT ABOUT ROMES IS IT’S ALL DIY. FROM PRODUCING TO MIXING TO EDITING MUSIC VIDEOS AND DESIGNING MERCH, YOU GUYS DO IT ALL. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO BE INVOLVED IN ALL THOSE ASPECTS OF YOUR MUSIC CAREER? OUT OF ALL OF THE DIY PROJECTS YOU COMPLETED WHAT’S THE ONE PROJECT YOU’RE MOST PROUD OF?

We’ve always enjoyed taking on all aspects of our art. We have a clear vision on how we want everything to look and feel for each project/single so having control over everything from the cover art to the promo photos to the videos ensures that we’re 100% pumped on all of it. It also helps get shit done a lot quicker. Given the current streaming culture with such a heavy emphasis on singles and continuity, I think it’s a huge benefit to have that ability to produce and mix your own music and take care of everything from start to finish. It seems more and more artists are doing that now and that’s definitely what’s enabled us to do what we’re doing currently with releasing a new track every month. Getting into this cycle of constantly releasing music has become a really exciting process for us. It’s liberating to just get music out as it’s written and not over-analyze shit to death to the point where months have gone by and you’re sick of the song before it’s even released.

YOU’RE A MUSICAL DUO BUT ALSO BROTHERS! FOR ALL THOSE BROTHERS AND SISTERS WANTING TO START A BUSINESS TOGETHER, WHAT’S THE SECRET BEHIND CREATING A SUCCESSFUL CAREER WITH A SIBLING?

We know the ins-and-outs of each other’s personalities so we know how far we can push the other guy without royally pissing him off. At the end of the day, it’s all about respect and acknowledging what we both bring to the table and I think we’ve learned to appreciate that about each other. Also, don’t be like the Gallagher brothers and kick the shit out of each other on stage. That always helps. But that being said, Jacob’s opinions are always wrong.

WITH THE CHALLENGES BROUGHT FROM THE PANDEMIC, YOU GUYS HAVE MANAGED TO FORGE AHEAD BY RELEASING YOUR FOURTH SINGLE THIS YEAR. HOW CHALLENGING HAS THIS YEAR BEEN FOR YOU BOTH? HAS IT ALTERED YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON LIFE AND RELATIONSHIPS AND PLAYED AN INFLUENCE ON YOUR SONGWRITING?

Definitely. The reality of it is, no one is having an easy time right now and this is a huge learning experience for everyone. The pandemic inspired the first single we put out this year “All Is Well”, and that kinda got the ball rolling. For us, keeping busy writing and recording music is the best way to stay sane through the whole thing so that’s where we’ve been putting all of our focus. In a weird way, the current state of affairs kind of provided an opportunity since we can’t tour at the moment.

FAST FORWARD SEVERAL MONTHS DOWN THE ROAD. THE VACCINE IS HERE, AMERICA HAS FULLY OPENED! BEYOND PERFORMING WHAT SOMETHING YOU’VE BEEN DYING TO DO THAT YOU’RE GOING ALL OUT ON ONCE THE PANDEMIC IS OVER?

Hug everyone.

IS THERE A CHARITY OR ORGANIZATION THAT MEANS A LOT TO YOU THAT YOU URGE OTHERS TO LOOK INTO? ANY PARTICULAR CONNECTION YOU HAVE TO IT?

We’re donating all the “Lose My Cool” proceeds this year to three great Canadian non-profits leading the way in ending systemic racism – Black Lives Matter TorontoBlack Artists’ Networks Dialogue, and Bear Clan Patrol.
