NXTSTYLE’s 2020 Songs of the Summer: Teischa “be alone”

INTRODUCING NXTSTYLE’S ‘SONGS OF THE SUMMER,’ HIGHLIGHTING OUR FAVORITE TRACKS WE’VE DISCOVERED THIS SUMMER. OVER 70 SONGS FROM NEW AND INDEPENDENT ARTISTS FORM OUR SUMMER 2020 SOUNDTRACK. TODAY WE FEATURE TEISCHA. THE AUSTRALIAN SINGER/SONGWRITER HAS BEEN A FAVORITE OF OURS FOR QUITE SOME TIME AS WE’VE FEATURED MANY OF HER SINGLES. THIS SUMMER, SHE DIDN’T DISAPPOINT AS SHE DELIVERED HER LATEST, THE EMOTIONALLY-FILLED SINGLE “BE ALONE”. LEARN MORE ABOUT TEISCHA IN OUR FEATURED INTERVIEW.

“BE ALONE” IS THE FOLLOWUP TO YOUR MIXTAPE ‘MOMENTARY’ AND ONE THAT HINTS AT A FADING RELATIONSHIP. TAKE US BEHIND THE CREATION OF THE SONG AND YOUR CONNECTION TO IT THAT MADE IT THE BEST CHOICE AS YOUR NEXT SINGLE.

I wrote “be alone” with my longest time collaborator, Styalz Fuego, and it became one of those songs that sat as a demo on our hard drives for at least 2 or 3 years, maybe even more. I remember randomly listening to it one night, years after first writing it, having grown up a little (a lot) with a few more life experiences under my belt, just being in a very different space mentally, and it just hit me real hard.

You know when you hear those songs that just perfectly explain where you’re at in your life and it almost shocks you a little bit that someone else could be feeling the same shit you are? I kinda did that to myself with this song. It’s like I didn’t need to finish it back then but needed to go through whatever it was life was going to throw at me over that time period until I was ready to dive back into it. It’s crazy how songs can have that kind of power over you and really contain such a life of their own.

“BE ALONE” OFFERS A SLIGHT CHANGE IN DIRECTION FROM ‘MOMENTARY’ AS EVERY NEW CHAPTER SHOULD. TALK ABOUT YOUR EVOLUTION AS AN ARTIST AND HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THE DIRECTION OF YOUR NEXT SET OF RELEASES.

I’ve had a bit of a fear of moving out of my moody, dark pop comfort zone for a while. Creating ‘momentary’ was my way of taking everything into my own hands. not being afraid of producing my own music, writing words that just need to get off my chest, and avoiding relying on other people in the process. Sometimes not knowing exactly what you’re doing opens doors you didn’t realise were even there. It gave me a lot of confidence in just focusing on making shit feel good and not overthinking the genre or sound that people expect from you, which is why I think “be alone” felt like the perfect follow up to the mixtape.

WITH THE CHALLENGES OF THE PANDEMIC, HAS IT ALTERED YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON LIFE AND RELATIONSHIPS? DO YOU SEE IT INFLUENCING WHAT YOU WRITE ABOUT?

Definitely. I know I’m not alone in feeling as though this time has put relationships, goals, future plans and just life in general, in perspective. I was one of those people who actually thrived in lockdown. It was like I didn’t have the expectations of the outside world hanging over me so had probably the most productive and creative couple of months I’ve had in years.

Even though this time is so daunting for all of us creatives, especially when thinking about the future of live music and a whole new reality of sharing art, it bought me back to why I make music in the first place and that was super refreshing.

WHETHER IT’S AN ALBUM, BEING AROUND CERTAIN PEOPLE, OR AN ACTIVITY, WHAT IS ONE THING THAT HAS HELPED YOU MOVE FORWARD DURING THE PANDEMIC? ANYTHING YOU CAN SUGGEST FOR OTHERS?

Honestly, just writing i think. being stuck under the same roof, my little brother and I basically just spent every day in our little studio making songs and also doing a couple fun little cover videos.

IN THE NEXT 100 YOU TOLD US YOU’D LOVE TO COLLABORATE WITH LUCIANBLOMCAM, UNO STEREO, AND STYLAZ FUEGO. ONCE LIVE EVENTS ARE BACK ON WHO WOULD YOU MOST LOVE TO TOUR WITH?

Lucian, UNO and Styalz are actually my regular collaborators. Have loved working with them over the years. once touring is back I would love to play shows alongside Miiesha or the queen Lianne La Havas.

WE HAVE A HUGE AMOUNT OF LOVE FOR AUSTRALIAN ARTISTS LIKE YOURSELF. THERE’S SO MUCH TALENT FROM THE REGION THAT CONSISTENTLY CATCHES MY ATTENTION. AS AN ARTIST WHO RESIDES IN AUSTRALIA, GIVE US YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE COUNTRY’S MUSIC SCENE AND THEIR SUPPORT FOR YOUR MUSIC. ARE THERE ANY AUSTRALIAN ARTISTS YOU LOVE THAT WE SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR?

We have such a unique music scene in Aus!! I love how isolated we are from the rest of the world (especially here in WA). The distance from what’s popular overseas allows us to have this freedom and space to create fresh ideas.

An Australian artist I can’t get enough of at the moment is Miiesha. her new record Ngaaringu is so important and powerful as is her voice!

AS WE HEAD INTO THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT FROM YOU FOR THE REMAINDER OF 2020?

I’ve got a couple more songs dropping this year as part of a bigger project. Also, finally making the visuals I’ve been dreaming of with some super talented local film makers and photographers in WA. Everything is coming together really naturally and authentically and i can’t wait to share.
