NXTSTYLE’s 2020 Songs of the Summer: Elina Eriksson “I Don’t Wanna Be Mad at You”

INTRODUCING NXTSTYLE’S ‘SONGS OF THE SUMMER,’ HIGHLIGHTING OUR FAVORITE TRACKS WE’VE DISCOVERED THIS SUMMER. OVER 70 SONGS FROM NEW AND INDEPENDENT ARTISTS FORM OUR SUMMER 2020 SOUNDTRACK. TODAY WE FEATURE ELINA ERIKSSON. THE SCANDINAVIAN POP ARTIST CAUGHT OUR ATTENTION THIS SUMMER WITH THE SLOW BURNING SINGLE “I DON’T WANNA BE MAD AT YOU”. GUIDED BY SOME HEAVY INFLUENCES WE CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT’S NEXT FOR HER MUSIC. LEARN MORE ABOUT ELINA ERIKSSON IN OUR FEATURED INTERVIEW.

“I DON’T WANNA BE MAD AT YOU” IS A SLOW-BURNING POP SINGLE THAT HINTS AT A RELATIONSHIP THAT’S GONE SOUR. TAKE US ROUGH THE CREATIVE PROCESS AND YOUR CONNECTION TO IT.

I started writing this song last summer and the idea of the song came to me when I was playing around with some production ideas in Ableton. The first thing I did was to lay down some chords and produce a drum beat. After that, I improvised some vocal melodies on top of it and the first line that came out was “I don’t wanna be mad at you”. It’s weird because sometimes I just sing something that I didn’t even know I was feeling and sometimes there’s not any truth in what I write at all, but this one is quite personal and is definitely inspired by something I was going through at the time.

THIS SONG WOULD BE A PERFECT PLACEMENT IN A TENSE OR CONTEMPLATIVE SCENE IN A TV SHOW OR FEATURED FILM. IF YOU HAD A CHOICE, WHAT WOULD BE THE ULTIMATE SYNC PLACEMENT FOR IT?

I would love to see it in a show like Euphoria!

YOU’RE NOW TWO SINGLES INTO YOUR CAREER. BOTH SINGLES RELEASED HAVE THIS VERY SMOOTH ELECTRO POP SOUL SOUND. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTRY AND THE DIRECTION YOU WANT TO TAKE YOUR MUSIC? ARE THERE ANY ARTISTS THAT YOU LOOK UP TO AND INFLUENCE YOUR SOUND?

Right now I’m exploring a lot with production and I’m trying to have fun with it and create music without overthinking it, as well as trusting my musical instincts. Like a lot of artists, I definitely tend to write a lot about love and my own experiences with it in different ways. It seems like there’s always something to say about it haha. I love pop music and melodies and I like to let the vocals guide where the production is going. There are so many artists that I look up to but some of my favorites right now are Tove Lo, Shura, IDER, Dua Lipa, LÉON, Lykke Li, Lauv, and The Japanese House.

OVER THE YEARS WE’VE REALLY NOTICED HOW GREAT AND UNDERRATED MUSIC FROM THE SCANDINAVIAN REGION IS. WE LOVE LEARNING MORE ABOUT DIFFERENT MUSIC CULTURES ESPECIALLY ABROAD. TALK ABOUT THE SCANDINAVIAN MUSIC SCENE AND WHAT YOU MOST LOVE ABOUT IT. AS AN ARTIST TALK ABOUT THE SUPPORT IT SHOWS FOR NEW ARTISTS. ARE THERE ANY SCANDINAVIAN ARTISTS YOU LOVE THAT WE SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR?

Sweden has a lot of amazing songwriters, producers, and artists, and pop music is definitely a big part of our culture here. We’re able to study music at an early age both in school and outside of school, which I think encourages kids to make music early on in life. I wouldn’t say the live scene in Stockholm is huge considering that so much music is coming from here, I would like it to be bigger for up and coming artists. Some Scandi-artists that I would recommend are Storme, Gimi, Ydea, and Ayelle.

AS WE DEAL WITH ONE OF THE MOST CHALLENGING YEARS AS A SOCIETY, DO YOU FIND THE MAJOR EVENTS OF THIS YEAR HAVE CHANGED YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON LIFE AND RELATIONSHIPS? HAS IT COME THROUGH IN YOUR SONGWRITING?

Yes for sure!! This year has changed my perspective in so many ways and has definitely taught me to be more grateful for what I have and appreciate the small things. On a personal level, this year has been a year of big changes for me and that has definitely come through in my songwriting.

WHETHER IT’S AN ALBUM, BEING AROUND CERTAIN PEOPLE, OR AN ACTIVITY, WHAT IS ONE THING THAT HAS HELPED YOU MOVE FORWARD DURING THE PANDEMIC? ANYTHING YOU CAN SUGGEST FOR OTHERS?

I’ve really enjoyed swimming in the lakes around Stockholm which have helped me to get out of my flat, where I’ve spent a lot of my time these past months.

OF THE TALENTED ARTISTS, SONGWRITERS, AND PRODUCERS OUT THERE IS THERE SOMEONE YOU WOULD REALLY LOVE TO COLLABORATE WITH NEXT?

My dream collab would be writing songs with Tove Lo and producing and writing with Shura.

AS WE HEAD INTO THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT FROM YOU FOR THE REMAINDER OF 2020?

Right now I’m working on some new songs and I’m finishing up my next single, which will be out later this year 🙂

IS THERE A CHARITY THAT MEANS A LOT TO YOU THAT YOU URGE OTHERS TO LOOK INTO? ANY PARTICULAR CONNECTION YOU HAVE TO IT?

Black vision collectiveCampaign Zero and It gets Better Project are three charities that I think are very important. They’re all doing an amazing job working to create an equal and safer world. As a queer woman myself I know it would’ve helped me a lot when I was younger, knowing about organizations like It Gets Better Project.
